Traffic Switch at the Direct Connector from IH 820 to I-35W a Success

The North Tarrant Express traffic crew successfully completed the opening of a new direct connector from westbound IH 820 to southbound I-35W overnight on Saturday, January 23. Workers closed the exit on the left-hand side of IH 820 and opened the new direct connector on the right-hand side.

Anticipating potential confusion for motorists, the North Tarrant Express promoted this traffic switch heavily in the weeks leading up to the opening of the new direct connector. "We are all creatures of habit," said Tommy Williamson, assistant public relations manager for the I-35W construction project. "Ensuring that drivers were informed of - and prepared for - the traffic switch was a top priority for our team."

Another traffic switch will take place in the next few weeks with the opening of the new director connector from eastbound IH 820 to northbound I-35W.

New Ramps Coming on NTE Segments 1 & 2W

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and NTE Mobility Partners have evaluated traffic flow along the NTE corridor since its opening in October 2014 and have determined that additional access to and from the existing TEXpress managed lanes system is needed on SH 121/183 near Hurstview Drive.

Two ramps will be added: A new entrance ramp from the westbound general purpose lanes to the westbound TEXpress managed lanes, and a new exit ramp from the eastbound TEXpress managed lanes to the eastbound general purpose lanes.

The new temporary Hurstview ramps will exist until the ultimate configuration for Segment 2 is built. The ramps are currently in the design phase; the project team will provide additional details as construction gets closer.

NTE in the Community

The North Tarrant Express is a sponsor at several upcoming transportation events:

Northeast Tarrant Transportation Summit: This event, now in its seventh year and occurring on Friday, February 19, 2016, has become one of the area's premier transportation events. This year's theme, "Shifting Gears: Challenges and Opportunities in Regional Mobility," will feature a variety of transportation experts discussing the issues facing our region in terms of funding, priority projects, and the impact of the Panama Canal on the region. The North Tarrant Express is a title sponsor of this event. Robert Hinkle, Director of Corporate Affairs for NTE Mobility Partners, will give a status report on I-35W construction as well as the North Tarrant Express. For more information regarding this event, please click here.

Public-Private Partnership Conference (P3C): The 2016 P3 Conference, on March 7-9, 2016, at the Sheraton Hotel in Dallas, will feature a series of learning sessions highlighting the complex issues surrounding public-private partnerships. Attendees will develop skills for planning and procuring a successful P3 initiative, learn industry best practices in selecting and negotiating with prospective partners, and hear first-hand observations from governments and other sponsors involved in P3s. Cintra and Ferrovial Agroman, as leading developers and contractors of major transportation projects such as the North Tarrant Express and LBJ Express, have joined together as a diamond sponsor for this event.

Know Before You Go

Construction continues at a very fast pace along I-35W right now, so we encourage drivers to stay safe and alert in the work zone and check for lane closures and detours in and around their workplaces and their children's schools.

Please observe all posted signage regarding speed limits and detours -- and observe the no cell phone laws in school zones. To "Know Before You Go," visit our Lane Closures page on the website.
