NTE | 35W Project Update June 2016

Upcoming Spur 280 Detour for Downtown Commuters

Downtown drivers should expect a change in their commute in the next few weeks as TxDOT has recently approved construction activities for the Spur 280 ramp to begin mid-July.

The Spur 280 connector to northbound I-35W in downtown Fort Worth will close for approximately two months to construct a new ramp.

The traffic detour will take drivers on the Spur 280 connector to southbound I-35W. Drivers will then exit Rosedale, and make a U-turn to proceed northbound on I-35W.

I-35W Construction Activities and Closures

With schools closed and less traffic on the roads, summer is an ideal time for construction activities.

Here is a summary of upcoming construction activities and closures that will take us through the summer and into 2017.

Upcoming construction activities to watch for:

  • The entrance ramp from downtown Fort Worth to northbound I-35W at Spur 280 will close (mid-July 2016)
  • Traffic shifts to new, permanent pavement south of Meacham Blvd. and near the Trinity River (Summer 2016)

Extended closures in place:
  • Northbound to southbound and southbound to northbound U-turns at Western Center Boulevard and I-35W (through summer 2016)
  • Southbound I-35W exit to Northside Drive/Yucca Avenue (through summer 2016)
  • Northbound I-35W off-ramp to westbound Spur 280 (through January 2017)
  • Northbound I-35W exit to Meacham Boulevard (through July 2017)
  • Southbound I-35W off-ramp to Papurt Drive (through December 2017)

Subscribing to the NTE e-alerts and checking the website for updated closure and detour announcements are two easy ways to stay on top of upcoming construction activities and areas that may have delays.

  • Segment 3B Expected to Finish On Schedule

Segment 3B, the 3.6-mile portion of I-35W between I-820 and US 81/287, is on the road to substantial completion by the end of the year. As of this writing, the section is 75 percent complete, and many major projects along the highway are open to traffic.

Thus far, the southbound main lane traffic between Basswood Boulevard and I-820 has been moved to its permanent location, and the Basswood Boulevard on-ramp has been restored to service. The bridge decks over Western Center Boulevard and Big Fossil Creek are also complete.

In the next few months, drivers can expect the frontage road connection and U-turns at the Western Center Boulevard intersection to be completed, as well as a northbound main lane traffic shift to its permanent location between Fossil Creek Boulevard and Basswood Boulevard.

    Know Before You Go!

As Texans, we know that just because it's summer doesn't mean we'll have clear skies ahead! Because inclement weather can cause construction activities to be cancelled or postponed, we encourage drivers to check for up-to-the-minute information on lane closures and traffic detours on our Twitter and Facebook accounts.

We also post information about accidents and delays, which can help keep you on track when traveling along I-35W or the North Tarrant Express corridor along Loop 820 and Airport Freeway.

Be sure to "Know Before You Go!" You can find a complete list of current lane closures here along with alternate route maps here.
